Charles University was founded by a charter issued on 7 April 1348 by Charles IV, King of Bohemia and the Holy Roman Emperor, as the first Studium generale north of the Alps and east of Paris. Charles University is thus one of the oldest European universities. It was modelled on the universities in Bologna and Paris, and within a very short time it achieved international renown. It had four faculties: theology, liberal arts, law, and medicine. Charles University is a multi-disciplinary, research-oriented and outward-looking institution, a successful member of the European higher education area, and one of the top two per cent of universities worldwide according to prestigious world league tables.
In 2017, academic programs at Charles University included 64 Bachelor’s, 66 Master’s, 34 long-cycle Master’s study programs and 222 doctoral study programs in total (data to October 31, 2017). More than half of all study programs are accredited in a foreign language as well, above all in English. The majority of study programs further branch out in other disciplines. The comprehensive areas of study offered at Charles University encompass most fields and areas in humanities, social sciences, natural science and medicine. Foreign students account for 14% of the student population at Charles University in 2017.
